Opposition to the Gospel and Missionaries On Rise in Many Districts of Jharkhand

GEMS missionary was threatened & abused by Bajrang Dal in Hazaribagh; believers were threatened to not to go to church in Palamu and VHP in its meeting at Dumka has threatened Christian missionaries to leave India.

Missionary Abused in Hazaribagh
Bro. Bhola Prasad serves as a missionary at Badkagaon of Hazaribagh (PEACE 1 Zone). On 5th October 2017 when he was returning home after ministry, around 12:30 PM four people belonging to Bajrang Dal took hold of Bro. Bhola, snatched his bag & phone, tore all the gospel tracts and broke his bicycle. Having pressed a wooden rod to his chest they forced him to say “Jai Bajrang Bali” and “Mai Hindu Hoon” (I am a Hindu). When he refused to say they threatened to kill him and used abusive words. They took video of this entire incident and threatened him to leave the place and to preach Jesus.

Believers Threatened in Palamu
On 1st Oct 2017 a group of RSS members threatened the Christian believers of GEMS church, Rajhara in the Palamu District (Jharkhand Zone) to not to go to church. After this incident some of the old believers of the church went and met with the opposers and asked them the reason for stopping the believers from going to church, for which they had no reason. By the grace of God, the church service was conducted peacefully on 8th October.

On 20th Oct 2016 the Sangh affiliates published false news in Dainik Jagran against the GEMS church here (http://news.gemsbihar.org/2016/10/persecution-of-believers-and-opposition.html).

Missionary Service Threatened in Dumka
On 9th October 2017 Dainik Jagran reported on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) two days program held in the Agrasan Bhawan, Dumka. One of the regional leaders Dr. Surendra Jain threatened the Christian missionaries to leave India and that they will hold a rally ‘Leave India’ and that they will not let even a single Christian missionary to live in India. This is a direct threat to the lives of Christians and Christian missionaries whose contribution to the development of the State of Jharkhand is mountainous and its foundation; either it be education or medical or humanitarian services.

Pray for the opposition which is against the Christians and missionaries in Jharkhand. Pray for the recent incidents of threatening of believers & missionaries at Hazaribagh, Palamu and Dumka. Pray for the believers to be strong in the Lord and for their and the missionaries’ protection. Pray that they opposers may know the truth of the gospel & the love of Jesus and may also realize the contribution of Christian missionaries to the state of Jharkhand.

Opposition to the Gospel in a Bihar Village Announced thru Newspaper

Opposers of the Gospel have threatened the missionaries, thru the newspaper Hindustan, with dire consequences for the service of GEMS in village Suara in the Dehri block of Bihar.

Sikaria ON (Operation Nehemiah) is an initiative of GEMS Sikaria Zone through which the prayer cells of GEMS campus reach out to the nearby villages. One of the villages reached is Suara in Dehri block. The members of the prayer cell led by Bro. Franklin (GIANT Coordinator) have been ministering for the past two years here. Last year there was verbal opposition by some people.

On 22nd September 2017 the Hindi daily ‘Hindustan’ carried a news article titled ‘Opposition Against Conversion’. The article says that members of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh have made allegations against Christian missionaries of conversion and a representation had met with the SDM. The newspaper has stated the words of one Mahendra Pratap Singh, a leader of this Sangh that poor Hindus are converted through allurement. Through this publication they have threatened the missionaries with dire consequences if they go the village on Sunday, 24th September 2017.

The conversion charges and the use of allurement to do so are false and the newspaper Hindustan has not contacted the missionary to publish their statement. In order to be safe from being punished legally for printing defamatory statement (Section 501) & for threatening (Section 503) the newspaper has cunningly avoided publishing the name of the person or organization; yet have communicated a threat.

Pray for the opposition which is against the ministry in Suara village; pray for the ministry to continue with God’s protection and provision. Pray that the opposers may know the truth of the gospel and the love of Jesus and be transformed. Pray for newspapers and media to be truthful in their publications.

Advocacy thru GEMS Enables Landless Musahars to Become Land Owners

Musahars are the most marginalized people in Bihar. 48 families of this community at Koath in the Rohtas district received lands to build houses through GEMS’ advocacy.

GEMS has been serving the Musahar people (who are traditionally ‘rat eaters’) and their children through the OUR (Operation Upliftment of Rural) People project at Koath in the Rohtas district of Bihar. The project was started in 2013 - http://news.gemsbihar.org/2014/09/marginalized-musahars-make-wholesome.html

The children receive education, food, healthcare, etc. Through continuous advocacy they have received lands and are grateful to the Lord.

Seeing the poor living conditions of the people in mud houses without proper roofing and wall, GEMS planned for collective housing scheme. For that an application with proposal was submitted to the DM (Magistrate of Rohtas District) in November 2014.

An order also was passed by the government in February 2015. But there was much delay as negotiation and documentation of the lands identified near the project could not be completed by the concerned officials. Finally, after all this process was completed, the distribution program was scheduled for January 2017 but it had to be cancelled. After due patience, prayers and perseverance, on Sunday 27th August 2017, three decimals of land along with Patta(Ownership Document) were distributed to 48 Mushahar families in the presence of Government officials by the grace of God.

All glory be to Him only! The poor landless Musahars of Koath village have now become owners of land and have received permanent address too.

GEMS Social Development Officer Sis. Gracy Hendry put in much efforts in this process and was helped by Bro. Rakesh Kumar (Associate Director, CP) and project in charge Bro. Vimal.

As the land allotment is done now it is turn to build basic houses for this people. Pray that the Lord may enable the construction of the houses. Pray that these people of Koath who have received land may also receive the heavenly blessing of salvation and eternal life.
